FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your questions,
answered

What is Menopause?

Menopause happens when a person’s ovaries stop releasing eggs. The diagnosis of menopause is when you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months (1 year). The average age of Menopause is 51 in Canada.

We can provide the drug identification numbers to you so you can look up whether your specific plan covers them – send us an email hello@jill.health

Some insurance plans include an HSA – health spendings account. This account can cover a wide variety of health spending including fit bits and health trackers, consultations with dietitians or health coaches, and even personal training.

What are the differences between Perimenopause, Menopause and Post-menopause?

Perimenopause is the years leading up to your last period. You may already experience some of the symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood and weight changes. Menopause is the time point when you have not had menstruation for 1 year. Post menopause is the time after the last period, where you may still have symptoms.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

The symptoms of menopause are varied but can be classified as vasomotor symptoms (including hot flashes and night sweats), genitourinary symptoms (including vaginal dryness, UTIs and changes in bladder function), mood changes, libido changes, weight changes, and bone density changes. All these changes are due to hormones no longer being produced by the body.

What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy for menopause is the use of medications with estrogens and progesterones in them, that help replace those no longer produced by the body.

Are bio-identical hormones more natural?

Not necessarily. Bio-identical means that the hormones match those produced by the body. The body produces several forms of estrogens and progesterones, some of which can be synthetically matched by medications. Just because a hormone product is bio-identical, it does not mean that it comes from a natural source. However, some forms of estrogen and progesterone used come from animals and plants.

Can menopause be treated naturally?

Yes, some women may find cognitive behavioural therapy effective for reducing symptoms, as well as other lifestyle changes in their nutrition and exercise. There are a variety of non-hormonal medications that can be used to treat the symptoms of menopause.

How long do I take these treatments?

Menopause treatments are meant to be taken long term. There is no universal time for all patients to start and stop treatment, it is individualized to your symptoms & your health risk profile. Symptoms can 4-8 years before your last menstrual period, and can continue for many years after.

What are the risks of treatment?

Every patient will have individualized risks based on their health profile and each type of medication carries different risks, but generally hormonal therapy is safe to start for most patients. There has been fear in the past, mostly due to a study from 2002 called the WHI trial. There are some increases of risk for a stroke, heart attack, blood clot or breast cancer. However your practitioner will review what your risk level is, and prescribe the safest medication for your risk level. Many newer medications have a reduced risk profile, especially non-oral dosage forms.
