What is Zepbound®?

Zepbound® is an injectable prescription medication used for chronic weight management. It is the first and only treatment in its class—a dual GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist. While Ozempic® only targets one hormone (GLP-1), Zepbound® targets two, which often leads to more significant weight loss in clinical trials.

How does Zepbound® work?

Zepbound® mimics two natural hormones in your body that regulate appetite and blood sugar. It works by:

  • Slowing stomach emptying, which helps you feel full longer.

  • Targeting the brain’s hunger signals to reduce "food noise" and cravings.

Improving how your body breaks down sugar and fat, making it a highly effective tool for metabolic health.

What is Zepbound® used for?

In Canada, Zepbound® is indicated for adults with:

  • Obesity (a BMI of 30 or higher).

Overweight (a BMI of 27 or higher) who also have at least one weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnea.

How to take Zepbound®?

It is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection (under the skin) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

  • Dosing: Your doctor will usually start you on a low dose (2.5 mg) for the first four weeks to allow your body to adjust, then gradually increase the dose every four weeks until you reach your target maintenance level.

  • Device: It is typically available in Canada as a KwikPen® or a single-dose vial.

What are common side effects of Zepbound®?

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal and usually occur when first starting or increasing a dose:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Stomach pain and indigestion

  • Fatigue

  • Injection site reactions (redness or itching)

  • Hair loss (temporary, often due to rapid weight loss)

Who shouldn't take Zepbound®?

You should not use Zepbound® if you have:

  • A personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC).

  • Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

  • A known serious allergy to tirzepatide or any of the ingredients.

Note: It is also not recommended for those with severe gastrointestinal disease (like gastroparesis) or those who are pregnant/breastfeeding.

How can I get a Zepbound® prescription online in Canada?

You can get a Zepbound® prescription online in Canada by consulting a licensed healthcare provider. Through a trusted telehealth service such as Jill Health, you can speak with a Canadian-licensed clinician from home. If they determine Zepbound® is appropriate, they can issue a prescription for local pickup or delivery.
